Johnnie Walker reincarnates Grammy founder Rewat Buddhinan for a new commercial

In the latest Johnnie Walker commercial, Thai music pioneer Rewat "Ter" Buddhinan is brought back to life to recount his inspiring journey.

Directed by renowned music video and commercial director Joseph Kahn, the commercial, titled "Will You Keep Walking?, was launched earlier last month in high-definition with state-of-the-art cinematic technology.

Kahn, who has worked with Britney Spears, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Kylie Minogue and many others, sat down and chatted about his first collaboration with the Johnnie Walker house.

How did you get involved in this project?

I have a really good relationship with the creative director, Johnny Tan. I've known him for quite some time and when he first came to me with this project, I knew this would be a great opportunity for me to advance my creativity. I'm always looking for new ways to become a better filmmaker and to do something the world has never seen before. In this case, I wanted to bring back someone who was so dear to the Thai community and to make people believe that he is still alive. I have directed commercials for alcoholic beverages before such as Bacardi and Budweiser, but this particular commercial was much different than all the rest because it had more emotion-based content.

How do you feel about Rewat?

Before this project I didn't know much about Rewat. But after learning about him I feel that he was a very inspirational man. I see how much of an impact he has made on the Thai music industry and I have a great deal of respect for him. I was very touched by how beautifully he carried himself. When filming this video, I really had to study his eyes. And just from his eyes I could tell that he was a very kind man. He was humble. I can see why everyone loved him so much.

How different was directing this commercial compared to directing music videos?

From a technical aspect, this actually wasn't very different from directing music videos. They both fall together in the same line. Styles are constantly changing, but the directing remains the same for the most part. From a "political aspect", directing this commercial was very different. When I direct a music video, the artist leaves everything to me and I am able to be as creative and take as many risks as I want. If the music video is a flop, then it is completely my fault and I have to take full responsibility for it. When filming a commercial, I am working with another collaborator and there are so many other parties involved that if I mess something up, I could potentially mess up the careers of many other people. It is much more political because everyone must feel the same way before anything gets approved.

What keeps you moving?

The pursuit of my art. I continuously strive to make the most amazing videos ever. I don't care about money, I don't care about fame, I care about the creativity. If I put a hundred percent into my videos and they all failed and everyone thought they were the worst videos they'd ever seen, I'd still die happy. Because I would know that I put all my efforts into chasing my dream. But if I only put 99 per cent into my work and failed, I would not be happy because I would know that I didn't give it that one extra per cent.

When will your next movie come out?

I'm actually in the process of coming up with a new one. But, I only make one movie every 10 years so don't expect one from me for a long time. This year. I really want to spend most of my time on commercials.
